You know the expression “big things come in small packages”, well Sugarpuss Beauty exemplifies this statement, and in this case, this small package delivers beauty, elegance, and it’s 100% home grown!

Stephanie June Johnson is a Oregon native with deep seeded local roots, as you’ll see when you visit her salon. The beautiful blue walls don pictures of all the women in her life – past & present – who’ve inspired her to become the accomplished artist that she is today. One of her biggest inspirations and the namesake for the salon is Barbara Stanwyck, the epitome of elegance. Stanwyck played a burlesque dancer, Sugarpuss O’Shea, in the 1941 movie “Ball of Fire”. As described in the movie, Sugarpuss denotes a sweetness to one’s face, something I think every girl aspires to have at some point in her life.

Stephanie, much like her salon, is true diamond in the rough. She’s a stunning petite beauty who could easily be on the cover of a high fashion publication, but there’s a simple elegance to her that’s magnetic. Her style and sense of self are comforting, and she has a unique ability to make each client feel like a princess. I suppose some of this is due to her extensive background in film working as a make-up artist on “Twilight”, “Extraordinary Measures”, and “Restless”. She continues to work on the locally filmed TNT television series “Leverage”.

Stephanie received formal training in make-up artistry at the Make-Up Designory in Los Angeles and she completed her aesthetics training at the International Beauty School in Portland. She is well known for her brow shaping techniques and was honored in the top ten for facial and waxing services by Citysearch in 2008 and 2009.

This natural fervor for maintaining beauty is obvious when you take a look around her salon. Stephanie has gone to painstaking lengths to ensure that everything in her salon is sustainable, organic, and community driven. All of her shelving was locally made from reclaimed wood by the multi talented Ray Erickson and she made devastatingly brilliant use of an antique Victorian school desk that doubles as a reception desk in her space. Take in all the lovely tapestry in her salon, all hand made by her lovely mother, Robin. And don’t forget to take the time to digest the beautiful hand painted feather on the door to the loo. An original piece that she wanted to preserve when she purchased the space so she enlisted the gifted artist Kate Van Doren to enhance it. Brianna Jackson, a brilliant Eugene based graphic designer, created Sugarpuss’ beautiful Victorian bee logo as well as her website, menu & business cards. That same bee happens to also be tattooed on Stephanie’s wrist!

This care and consideration for her community and clients shows in all of her salon products. She uses Alchemilla Skin Care, an all natural, organic skin care line that is handmade in small batches from potent organic medicinal and beautifying herbs, many of which are grown on a 100% wind powered herb farm right here in Oregon.

In addition to making your skin fabu, you should really consider booking an appointment for a make-up tutorial or have Stephanie make you Vogue ready with a make-up application for any occasion. Again that special care and detail exists in the Jane Iredale mineral based cosmetics that she uses. And yes, they are also for sale.

Now it’s time to take a little “me” time for yourself and make a day out of it. You could even make it a girls day with facials and shopping. If you haven’t been to the Alberta area you are missing out on some fabu shopping. There are several superb eateries within feet of Sugarpuss and some wonderful boutiques.
